Grambling State University is a historically black, public, coeducational university in Grambling, which is a city in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. In the 2000 census, the city’s population was estimated at a number of nearly 5000 inhabitants, and due to this small number of people, living within its limits, it is more often referred to as a town, rather than a city.
Grambling State was founded in 1901 and was accredited in 1949. The school became a college, in 1946, being named after P.G. Gambling, who donated a parcel of his land, on which the institution was constructed, gaining university status in 1974.
After being relocated and renamed, several times, since it was founded, Grambling State grew, and since 1977, several new academic programs were incorporated, and new facilities were added to the 384-acre campus, including a computer science building, a business building, a stadium and an intramural sports center.
The athletic teams from Grambling State are known as the Grambling Tigers, who compete in the NCAA Division I (I-AA for football), and in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), in various sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, football, golf, soccer, bowling and volleyball.
The list of notable Grambling State alumni includes names like Tommie Agee - former professional baseball player, Natalie Desselle-Reid – actress, Charles M. Blow - New York Times columnist, James ‘’Shack’’ Harris - First black quarterback to start in the NFL, Goldie Sellers - former professional football player, Ronnie Coleman - American professional bodybuilder and eight time Mr. Olympia winner, as well as several other great people.
